Our Volunteer History

Started at the Westminster Hospital in 1987

In our 28th Year !

The St Stephen’s Volunteers was established in the mid-eighties, early in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Volunteers started a driving service driving people with AIDS to hospital and a befriending service. To combat isolation an evening tea service was started in the dayroom on the ward getting patients out of their rooms.

Jean Hunt MBE a volunteer originally began as a tea party once a week on the ward and now has developed into a 30 strong team that provide services in three areas of the hospital.

St Stephen's Volunteer Jean Hunt was invited to Buckingham Palace on 6th December 2007, where Her Majesty the Queen presented her with the MBE medal at the investiture ceremony. (See Gallery and Links)

In 1948 St Stephen's Hospital became part of the National Health Service. The St Stephen's Hospital closed in 1989 making way for the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital open in 1993.

Become a Volunteer

Teamwork is the ability to work as a group toward a common vision, even if that vision becomes extremely blurry.

St Stephen's Volunteers are looking for new volunteers to help us provide information, refreshment services and a listening ear to HIV patients, their friends and relatives at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital and the Dean Street Clinic all part of the NHS Foundation Trust.

Volunteers support patients, their partners and relatives during their visit to the Kobler Outpatient Clinic, Ron Johnson Ward and the Dean Street Clinic in Soho. We also help in practical ways, by providing a refreshment service in the Kobler Clinic, Ron Johnson Ward and Daycare.

We provide information to patients their partners and relatives about the services available to HIV positive people and also help clinic staff to carry out patient surveys and other related tasks.

Volunteers also provide a Meet & Greet service at the entrance to the St Stephen’s Centre, directing people to find their way to their clinic appointments and visitors to the building.

If this sounds like the sort of volunteering that interests you then please e-mail or text us.
We look forward to hearing from you.
