Our History

The St Stephen’s Volunteers was established in the mid-eighties, early in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Volunteers started a driving service driving people with AIDS to hospital and a befriending service. To combat isolation an evening tea service was started in the dayroom on the ward getting patients out of their rooms.

Jean Hunt MBE a volunteer originally began as a tea party once a week on the ward and now has developed into a 30 strong team that provide services in three areas of the hospital.

St Stephen's Volunteer Jean Hunt was invited to Buckingham Palace on 6th December 2007, where Her Majesty the Queen presented her with the MBE medal at the investiture ceremony.
